Sparrow Soap’s Virtual Soap Lab

Welcome to Sparrow Soaps

Course Description:

Have you ever wanted to make all natural soap for family and friends?  How about opening your own soap company?  Here at Sparrow Soaps we are living both of these dreams and want to teach others how to do the same.  In this beginner course, you will learn the art and science of making all natural, cold-process soap.  Our class is designed with experiential learning in mind!  You will first watch a brief presentation from us, practice through an engaging virtual soap lab to build up your confidence, then apply these special techniques and knowledge in the real world with your first batch of soap.  At the end of this course, you should not only have a foundational understanding of cold-process soapmaking; but also come out with approximately 10 bars of soap–if you follow our recipe.  (By the way, that is a $70+ value if you decide to sell them.)

In addition to the course content here, you will also receive our booklet packed with recipes, helpful links, and troubleshooting resources to refer back to as you make your soap.  Additionally, we want each of you to know that we are happy to be a resource and answer any questions you may have.  Please feel free to click our instructor bios to send us a message or reach out to us on our Sparrow Soaps social media pages.  We look forward to seeing you in the course!

Students will Learn:

  • The importance of lye safety, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling techniques, and appropriate storage practices to minimize risks associated with working with caustic substances.
  • How to accurately measure and mix lye and water, following a step-by-step process that minimizes splashing and fumes. You will also learn the importance of adding lye to water rather than water to lye and its implications for safety.
  • The concept of flashpoint in relation to fragrance oils and essential oils, and demonstrate the ability to locate and interpret flashpoint information on product labels.
  • To evaluate various fragrance oils based on their flashpoints and suitability for cold process soapmaking.  Thus making informed decisions when choosing scents to ensure both safety and desired scent retention in the final product.
  • To differentiate between light trace, medium trace, and heavy trace in soapmaking; describing the characteristics of each stage, such as fluidity and thickness. You will also be able to identify visual cues to recognize when the soap batter has reached these trace stages.
  • How each type of trace affects the soapmaking process including texture, moldability, and ability to hold additives
  • Proper technique of heating oils before incorporating lye to initiate saponification. Emphasis will be placed on reaching safe temperature ranges to prevent overheating and potential consequences of overheated oils are discussed.
  • To apply the acquired knowledge of lye safety, flashpoints, trace development, and oil heating to successfully create a cold process soap batch–all while prioritizing safety and technique.
Yes! If you have never made a bar of soap before, then you are in the right place! (Though we won't turn away other soapmakers who want to hone their craft.) We actually enjoy teaching beginning soapmakers and know that you can do it! If you are nervous, just know that we are here to support you every step of the way!
Great question! On the main tab of this course, you will find a supplies list. The supplies list is hyperlinked to a variety of vendors where you can purchase from them directly. Many of our students decide to wait until after they finish the course before purchasing supplies, however, you are more than welcome to do so before and follow along. We would recommend, however, that you reach out to us prior to purchasing your fragrance/essential oils for your first batch of soap. Some fragrance oils and essential oils can be finicky...

If purchasing these items separately feels a bit too daunting or you are worried that you may not pick the "right" ingredients, we also sell "Beginner Soapmaking Kits" on our website. You can purchase a kit at www.sparrowsoaps.com.
You can absolutely replace goat's milk with another nourishing milk for your soap. Our recipe, however, is specific to goat's milk so you may need to experiment or adjust your recipe if you decide to use milks like oat, rice, almond, coconut, etc... If you would like some guidance on adjusting the recipe, please do not hesitate to contact us!
Here at Sparrow Soaps, we have been using goat's milk in our soap since our inception. Given that we also run family farms with goats, the milk to make our soap is quite plentiful. Announcement:  Sparrow Soaps Storefront

June 2nd, 2023

Greetings fellow soapmakers,

We hope that you are learning lots about soapmaking, enjoying the course, and beginning to experiment with making soap in your own homes.  We also wanted to take the opportunity to announce our new storefront in the quaint town of Putnam, Connecticut.  We are pinching ourselves and our hearts are filled with gratitude as we open our doors at 350 Kennedy Drive.  At our new storefront, we plan on continuing to make nourishing goat milk soap among other products and bring back the old school way of coming to a boutique and having a complimentary gift box made for you.

We truly could not have gotten here without the encouragement and help from our family, friends, loyal customers, and excited students who have continued to support our dream.  The most important, thank you, however is to God who put this dream in our hearts; to take our business and mission to the next level.  We are excited to continue connecting with folks all across the world online, but also to set up shop in our own backyard where we can meet folks face to face and spark some extra joy in their day.Friends, most dreams are from The Lord and our thoughts go to the word "desire".  In Latin, desire means "of the Father".  When you desire something, you are connecting with God and He is connecting with you.  Those dreams in your heart are from Him and if/when it is His will, they will come to fruition.  So never stop praying and dreaming because when the time is right, God will open doors and guide the way!

So we pray that this soapmaking journey will be fruitful for you as it has been to us.  Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about the content, troubleshoot soapmaking woes, and need some soapmaking advice.  We are happy to help and hope that you will come see us in our new home in Putnam, Connecticut soon.  Thank you.

God Bless,

Michelle & DanielleSparrow Soaps
